BNPL vs Personal Loan in Malaysia: Which Is Better for Your Financial Needs?
As a result of the increasingly high cost of living, Malaysian buyers are looking for easy ways to manage their monthly expenditure. With that in mind, Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) has now become a popular way to buy things in Malaysia, particularly when shopping online or using e-wallets.
BNPL provides an easy and sometimes interest-free way for customers to split the cost of a purchase over multiple months. At the end of 2025, Malaysia had registered 7.5 million BNPL users, an increase that has more than tripled from that of 2.6 million in 2023.
However, while BNPL can lighten the monetary burden of many kinds of purchases, it may not be suited for every financial need. Personal financing or personal loans are often a better choice if you are looking to finance a larger sum or when you are in need of money for a larger expenditure.
When trying to compare BNPL vs personal loans, which is better? The answer will depend on what you need the money for, how much you need, when you need it, how fast you can repay it, and what you can afford.
What is Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL)?
BNPL is a form of loan that enables you to buy an eligible product or service and pay for it over a longer period as opposed to the full amount when you make the purchase. Some may even defer the first payment off for a month.
Common BNPL facilities include Grab PayLater, SPayLater, and Atome.
The process is usually straightforward. The consumer makes a purchase with a merchant, selects a BNPL during checkout, and pays the cost in installments according to the provider’s repayment schedule.
While the process is generally the same for every service provider, the exact amount of installments, fees, interest, or other charges may differ between providers.
For instance, Grab PayLater's standard installment plan splits payments into four interest-free chunks, with the first installment charged upfront at purchase (8- and 12-month plans are also available for a fee).
SPayLater, on the other hand, offers 1, 3, 6, or 12-month plans and defers payment to the following month, but charges a 1.5% monthly processing fee on plans longer than three months, and on 3-month plans for purchases outside the Shopee platform. This is an example of the differences between just two of the most commonly used BNPL facilities in Malaysia.
Before using a BNPL facility, it is best to check the repayment dates, any applicable charges, and the actual total amount you will have to pay.

Why Has BNPL Become Popular in Malaysia?
One reason for BNPL's popularity is that it is integrated into online shopping and digital payment. This means consumers can decide on an installment option while shopping, without needing to find a separate other loan for the purchase.
Because of the smaller installments, buying a product through BNPL can be easier to fit within a monthly budget. Some BNPL facilities even offer additional promotions or discounts, making them attractive for certain types of purchases.
Nevertheless, always bear in mind that a smaller installment does not necessarily translate to a lower overall cost. It is important to consider the repayment amount and how it fits into your other financial commitments.
Additionally, spreading your payment over more installments could result in interest charges, increasing the actual cost of the product from its stated price.
Things to Consider Before Using BNPL
As much as BNPL can make purchases for daily and everyday items more manageable, it is important to look beyond monthly installments when comparing financing options. Consider the total repayment amount, any applicable interest or fees, and other possible charges so that you understand the full financial commitment before making a decision.
Like all forms of loans, it is best to use BNPL prudently. Here are a couple of factors to consider before using BNPL
● Multiple small installments can add up
One BNPL installment may seem manageable on its own, but several BNPL purchases can create multiple monthly commitments at the same time.
When you have several BNPL payments with different repayment dates, it can be harder to keep track of how much you need to pay each month. Before you spend, consider your existing commitments and the total sum of your combined installments, rather than looking at each purchase separately.
● Late payment fees or other charges may apply
BNPL facilities may have different terms and conditions. Late payments or other issues can lead to additional charges depending on the provider. If you are going to use a BNPL facility, know in advance when payments are due, what will happen if you miss a payment, and how much you will have to pay.
BNPL late fees typically range from RM10 to RM30 per missed installment, depending on the BNPL provider. This is usually accompanied by an immediate freeze on your account. Taking the three most common BNPL services as examples, Grab PayLater charges a flat RM10 late payment fee per missed payment, capped at RM30 for installment plans. A missed payment also suspends the account, and users must pay both the outstanding amount and the late fee to reactivate it.
Shopee SPayLater charges a late fee of RM10 or the principal bill amount, whichever is lower, and freezes the account until the outstanding amount is paid. For Atome, a late payment charge of up to RM30 applies to each missed scheduled payment, and the account is suspended until all outstanding amounts, including late charges, are paid.
While the small installments and penalty charges may seem like small amounts by themselves, they can contribute to a phenomenon known as fee stacking, where multiple fees or charges accumulate on top of one another.
Multiple missed payments across different BNPL platforms can cause these charges to add up quickly, resulting in a significant overall financial burden and making it increasingly difficult to meet repayment obligations.
BNPL Regulation in Malaysia: What consumers should know
Like all forms of credit, BNPL services should be used with prudence and careful consideration. Malaysia has strengthened its consumer credit sector regulation through the Consumer Credit Act 2025 (Act 873). This Act came into force on 1 March 2026 and the licensing and registration requirements for relevant credit providers and credit service providers took effect on 1 June 2026.
BNPL companies are among those required to obtain a licence from the Consumer Credit Commission (CCC), with a six-month transition period starting from 1 June 2026 for industry players to apply for the relevant licence or registration.
The enforcement of this law in Malaysia is intended to strengthen consumer protection, improve transparency and promote fair, responsible, and professional practices among the consumer credit industry.
Is BNPL a Form of Personal Loan?
A common question is whether BNPL is comparable to other personal loan services? Not exactly. While BNPL is generally a form of short-term consumer credit, there is in fact a difference between BNPL and personal loans.
A personal loan, in general, provides an approved amount of financing that can be used for a broader range of needs, depending on the lender and the loan terms. Unlike BNPL, which is generally linked to a specific purchase or participating merchant, personal loans are not necessarily related to any specific transaction. This gives personal loans a broader range of potential uses.
How Personal Loan Repayments Work
Personal loans typically involve an approved financing amount, tenure, interest or financial cost, and a scheduled monthly payment. The total amount you will have to repay will be determined by the terms of the specific loan. These terms are usually explained and agreed upon by the borrower and loan provider in advance.
Furthermore, most loan providers will offer information to help borrowers make informed decisions based on their specific situation. Seek guidance from the personal loan provider in evaluating the monthly repayment and total borrowing cost.
When Might a Personal Loan be More Suitable than BNPL?
Personal loans might be a better option to consider under some circumstances. An example of this is when the financial need involves more than a specific retail purchase.
Another example is when your need is urgent and you need funds and financial advice. This does not mean that a personal loan is a better choice than BNPL. Rather, they are a different type of financing service that may be more appropriate in certain situations, depending on your financial needs and circumstances.
● When You Need Financing for a Larger Expense
Some expenses may not fit naturally into a BNPL arrangement. These could include necessary home repairs, education or professional development, moving-related expenses and other significant planned household costs.
If you are considering loans for a larger expense, first determine whether the expense is necessary and how much you actually need. Avoid taking on more loans simply because a larger amount is available.
● When You Need Funds Rather Than To Finance a Purchase
BNPL is usually built around a specific purchase with a merchant. If your financial need is related to expenses that cannot be paid through a BNPL facility, personal loans can be more flexible, depending on the lender’s terms.
This could be especially relevant when there are several related expenses to be taken care of rather than one specific purchase. Only borrow if the repayment is affordable within your existing budget.
● You Want a Structured Repayment Plan
Personal loans provide you with defined information on the loans amount, tenure, and expected monthly repayments right from the beginning.
This will provide a clearer picture of the commitments you’re making during the repayment period.
Having a repayment schedule doesn’t eliminate the need for an affordability evaluation. The monthly payment should still fit comfortably within your existing financial plan, expenses, and commitments.
BNPL vs Personal Loan: Which One Should You Choose?
There isn’t a clear-cut answer that applies to everyone. Rather, consider your financial situation and ask yourself a few questions before taking on either option.
● What Am I Paying For?
Is the loan for one particular purchase, or do you have a wider financial need? BNPL can also be useful in spreading the cost of an eligible purchase while personal loans may be more relevant where the need is not tied to a particular merchant or transaction.
● How much money do I actually need?
Work out the amount you need before deciding how to finance it. Avoid borrowing more simply because a higher amount is available.
● How Quickly Can I Repay It?
Consider how the repayment period fits into your monthly budget. A repayment that looks manageable now should also remain affordable alongside your other commitments.
● What Is the Total Cost?
Do not compare options based only on their advertised monthly installments. Look at the total repayment, interest or loan costs, fees and any potential late payment charges.
● What other financial commitments do I have?
Consider your existing loans, BNPL installments, credit card payments, household expenses and other regular commitments. The financing option you choose should be one that you can repay without putting unnecessary pressure on your finances.
